In the seventies a friend of mine came to visit us with his latest girlfriend. She was very demure and kept giving everyone knowing looks under lowered brows. We had a wonderful eucalyptus, or gum tree as it's called in Australia, growing in our garden in Syndenham, and I took loads of photographs of her among her gum leaves. I was fascinated with her lovely strawberry blond hair.
I particularly enjoyed trying to get the impression of the 'out of focus' blue/green leaves in the foreground of this painting.
