This handsome lion was staring into the setting sun. I painted this with a palette knife and I love the way I was able to use the same greeney-grey of the background colour to also create the shadow on the lion's face. The use of one colour to do two different jobs makes for terrific unity in a painting.
The yellows, oranges and reds, work wonderfully to indicate the sunlight and I particularly liked the liquid look of the eyes. The lion's whiskers are a bit rough and ready, but when you're using a palette knife you have very few other options!
