I started this painting looking at myself in my bathroom mirror, with an easel standing one leg on the bath, and the other two out on the floor. It was very awkward and so too was the finished painting - it was all out of proportion with the top lip too long and.... well, it was just awful. It looked like some evil relative.
Weeks and weeks later I got someone to stand behind me in the bathroom and take a photograph of my reflection so that I could see where I was going wrong. This is the much happier re-working of that original disastrous painting, with the proportions a bit more accurate and some nice quirky details that say 'ME!'
I loved the blue shadow on the collar of the striped shirt where it fades off in such a causal manner into the background. I also love the dark shadows on the red jacket.
