From the Rolf Harris Tour Brochure:
I asked June Thomas, an artist friend of mine, if she would pose nude for a painting. She agreed, but thought she should get some experience of modelling first.. It was good timing, because the dissertion for her University degree was to be on the role of woman in art, both as artists and as models, and she wanted to experience what it was like being the one was looked at. She got a job modelling for a group of professional artists, and after the initial panic, found that she was quite at ease, and enjoyed, as it were, being their inspiration.
I took all sorts of photos of her, and this one seemed to be the best, as it juxtaposed the yellowish artificial light, and the bluish daylight from the open window. I worked on and off on this painting for months and months, before I felt happy with it.
The thing I am most pleased with, is the use of emerald green throughout, to get the effect of that bluish daylight. I particularly like the blue/green shadows on her back, contrasting with the flesh colours. Interestinly enough, there is no blue paint used anywhere in the picture.
