Founded in 1968, Mdina Glass still thrives on Malta today. Though pieces from the glassworks' early days are the most desirable, all Mdina glass has enjoyed increasing values over recent years.
Mdina glassware can be divided into three categories: pieces made during Michael Harris's regime, work dating from the 20 years of so after his departure in 1972, and modern designs from the mid-1990s onwards. Such was the enduring commercial appeal of Harris's designs, most especially his mediterranean colour schemes, that they and their derivatives continued to be produced at Mdina into the early 1990s.
Collector valuess conform to and are dictated by these categories. Pieces directly associated to Harris are by far the most sought after; his engraved signature on a Mdina piece multiplies its value up to 500%.
Conversely, items from Mdina's recent production have yet to establish a collector base outside Malta.
Collectors today are likely to find glassware made between 1972 and the mid-1990s to be the most accessible, and should look out for unsigned pieces made during the Harris era and those made later but still retaining Harris's themes. The base of many of these feature the distinctive looping engraved Mdina signature that was introduced after 1972.
