This piece is such an important work for me. I saw the way the elderly couple, in a land not so far away, working the earth, as they have for their whole lives before. Old and withered they worked as one, against the unyielding soil and despite the ache of old age. Watching them against the sunset of fire of dusk I was humbled by their proud dignity, their absolute certainty that their soil would ultimately provide for them. I thought of lessons they had received from their parents, a generation before, the lessons they in turn had passed to their children. Lessons about hard work, struggle, love. I thought of a life so vast. Land so great. Events so big, that these two people toiling the land almost seemed irrelevant................a pinprick of inconsequence..............Yet the seeds they were sowing were the seeds of their future, their ticket to see another day, to rise with the sun, to work till nightfall, to eat, laugh and cry, and live life itself.
In great struggle
Against the fire of Life
They took to the land
With great courage
Against the odds
They never surrender
For within the land
They will find life
A life of hope, strength and love
All they need
To see the sun rise another day.
