This is a painting done from a photograph of Simone, the daughter of an artist friend Jason Monet and his wife Doris. I was staying with them on Philip Island in Victoria, Australia.
I originally tackled this in various tones of green to show my approach to starting an impressionist painting. It was called 'Baby Blues' when it was reproduced for the BBC publication of 'Rolf on Art'. I intended to finish it in full colour as soon as I got a minute. Unfortunately that window of time took ages to present itself, and the green rough sat propped against the studio wall for months.
When I did finally start putting it into full colour, I was amazed at the various shape and proportion changes I had to make when I saw it again, and also at how many different shades of red, orange and pink there were. I liek the tiny bits of the original green background that you can glimpse here and there through the reds and pinks.
Simone recently celebrated her 21st birthday, so you can tell how long ago that photograph was taken. She is as beautiful now as she was then!
