This was inspired by some photograps I took looking directly into the sun in Malta. I had somebody shading my lens using their hand, held just out of shot, and I was amazed that the photograph came out as well as it did.
In the resulting painting, I particularly like the use of the opposite colours, red and deep transulcent green. I feel the green creates a great impression of looking down through the water, especially in the shadow of the various boats. I also think the reflection of the brilliant sunlight bouncing off the waves works very well, and I love the way the colour of these reflections moves from peak white through to brilliant yellow, and contrasts so well with the red and pink colours on the surface of the waves.
