"This was inspired by a photograph I took of Trafalger Square in the 1970's, as anyone who is familiar with the present day bus route will be aware.
I started this whole painting by roughly covering the white canvas with a thin casual layer of cobalt violet, a colour I particularly love. When that was dry, I gradually started to add some lightened Cerulean Blue into the top of Nelson's Column and the lampist, and slowly darkened that as I worked down the canvas. Then I started putting in the white of the sky, (actually, white plus a touch of Naples Yellow), living silhouettes of the trees just in the original Cobalt Violet underpaint.
I'm particularly thrilled by the random nature of the way people appear, as they wait to cross at the lights, and the sunlight reflected from the side of the far left bus, warms my heart every time I see it."
