Mackenzie Thorpe: Glossary of Imagery and Symbols
Animals: Various Personalities in each of us:
Mackenzie chooses to paint people in his life as animals, to allow himself to depict them in many different ways. He can paint multiple portraits of one person and by using different animals each time, he is showing different sides of that person.
Shepherd: Parents:
Their responsibility is to care for the flock and guide them through life's ups and downs.
Press Release December 3rd 2000 The Mail On Sunday:
A Sheepish Grin From William and Ffion
The slyly smiling sheep are all over the place. The shepherd's face is pressed so far into his chin he's probably having difficulty seeing where he's going himself.
Could William Hague be making a point to his Tory flock about his own policitcal tribulations in his choice of Christmas card this year?
It is the work of Mackenzie Thorpe, a North Yorkshire artist, and a friend of the Conservative leader and his wife Ffion. For the third year running the couple have chosen one of his shepherd and sheep scenes.
The previous two cards were even bleaker. Maybe this year's is meant to suggest that while still struggling, the political skies are at last beginning to clear.
The artist says on the back of the card that his work expresses an entire range of human emotion, from the special bond of love and friendship, to the importance of self-reflection and individual triumphs.
He adds: 'They are a tribute to the creativity within all and are a vivid expression of hope and the human spirit.'
He said: 'When they first saw the picture in my studio they thought it was wonderful and Ffion thought it was very warm and friendly.'
