Many years ago I was driving along The Embankment on an early autumn evening. There was an all-pervading reddish brown foggy light. The barges in the middle of the Thames made a wonderful impact with Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament just visible in the background. The image epitomised a typical English misty landscape where the things closer to you are sharp and clear and the objects further away are fainter and more hazy.
