From the tour brochure:
This image comes from the time I was in Malta during the 1970's. One Sunday afternoon my wife Alwen and I had been exploring. We came into a sqaure with an old church at the far end. There was some young men driving round and round in a battered car and at the other end of the square were these two old men sitting on the stone steps of the church. I loved the effect of the sunlight on the crumbling facade of the building. To paint the weathered stone section, I tried a technique used by L S Lowry. I first applied thick flake white oil paint to the canvas. While that was still wet I pushed the flat of a palette knife down on the paint and lifted it off, to create a spiky uneven effect. This background was left to dry before I painted the scene over the uneven bumpy surface.
